Minimalist Skincare Routine: Why Fewer Ingredients and Chemicals Deliver Better Results

Do you consider yourself a minimalist? Maybe youʻve hopped aboard the Marie Kondo way of life or perhaps living the “less is more” lifestyle has always been your M.O. Whatever your approach to decluttering, it's possible there's something you havenʻt thought about: a minimalist skincare routine.

Many people struggle with skin conditions. From acne to redness to  dryness, rosacea, and mature/aging skin, there are lots of skin conditions to consider. There is also a seemingly endless supply of serums, topicals, cleansers, masques, and other “treatments” on the market all promising to fix your skin concerns.  That’s a lot of information, a lot of products, and seemingly, not a lot of results. So what’s a skincare lover to do? How do you actually get the skin you want without overloading your face with an entire drugstore aisle of products?

The answer is minimalist skincare. Instead of piling on lotions, potions, and layers of skincare products, the idea behind this natural skincare routine is to use less but use the skincare with the right ingredients. Higher quality skincare products go a long way, especially when they’re made with simple, natural ingredients. You don’t need more, you need products that are more targeted to your concerns.

BotanyBeauty: A Better Path to Clean Skin Care

At BotanyBeauty (Mālie Organic’s line of clean skincare products), we abide by the “fewer takes your farther” mentality. BotanyBeauty is an offshoot of the Mālie brand, which emphasizes preserving the Earth’s natural resources so they’ll be around for future generations to enjoy.

That doesn’t just extend to our products’ manufacturing, although that’s involved as well. It also entails what we put into our products. The ingredients and formulations are intentionally crafted to give you the very best skincare for your needs. Nothing more and nothing less. For us, it’s always been about quality over quantity. We present our customers with products that support a natural skincare routine so they can feel good about what’s going onto their skin both now and in the future.

Clean up your skin care routine and clean up your life. The two go hand in hand.

The Essentials for a Minimalist Skincare Routine

To bring minimalism into skin care, you have to understand the basics. That means knowing which products you need, what should be in those products, and which products you can skip. Keep in mind that everyone’s needs are different. What one person may need may differ from another based on their individual skin concerns. Those with dry skin may need a few more or less products than those with oily skin or vice versa.

Instead of thinking of skin care as something that adheres to a one-size-fits-all protocol, reframe it to be your personal prescription for a more radiant, glowing you!

The Basics for Minimalist Skincare

Consistency for Better Skin

Before we even get into talking about the products themselves, the first thing to discuss is usage. Whatever you include in your minimalist skincare routine should be things that you will actually use consistently. It’s not worth it to have tons of jars and bottles cluttering up your medicine cabinet only to use them once every three months. Find products you love and will commit to using on a regular basis and you’ll see actual results.

Not every product needs to be used every day. For instance, exfoliants are intended to be used no more than twice a week. Other products like cleansers, serums, and moisturizers are meant for daily use. Establish your everyday routine vs. your once-in-a-while routine and make a commitment to stick to it to get the most out of your skin care.

A High-Quality Cleanser

Getting rid of excess oil, dirt, debris, and sebum is necessary for everyone no matter their type of skin. The cleanser you choose will depend on your skin type (i.e., oily vs. dry vs. combination) but having a trustworthy facial cleansing product you rely on is key. Use this twice a day, morning and night, and occasionally once again if you have a particularly sweaty workout or are removing a full face of makeup.

A Serum Treatment for Skin

Having one targeted serum is generally recommended to address specific skin concerns. Serums vary in terms of their purpose; for instance, Vitamin C is typically recommended for radiance while Hyaluronic Acid delivers intense hydration. The Illuminating Serum from BotanyBeauty is a universally adored skin serum intended for a variety of skin types. With 70% organic ingredients and an organic blend of antioxidant rich oils, it helps target fine lines and signs of aging without feeling heavy or weighing you down.

A Lightweight Moisturizer for the Skincare Minimalist

When you’re keeping your skincare routine to a minimum, the final thing to include is a lightweight moisturizer. Even those with oily skin need to moisturize. Forgoing this step may cause your skin to overproduce oil and lead to even more blemishes in the long run. Skin care minimalism is about balance. We don’t want to give you more than you need. Instead, we want you to have everything you actually do need to succeed with your skin goals.

It doesn’t have to be complicated; it just has to be correct.

The Extras for Skin Care

We previously mentioned additional products that can be used on a less regular basis. For some people, these should be incorporated more often than others.

Eye Cream

Utilizing a high-quality eye cream is a good idea if you’re concerned about fine lines, wrinkles, and/or puffiness around the eye area. This may not be an absolute necessity for everyone, but it’s not a bad idea to add into your minimalist skin care routine. If you’re open to including just one extra product, this should be it.

Facial Tonic

Another option for your special little extra could be a facial toner/facial tonic. The great thing about toners is that they don’t add layers. Instead, they act as cleansers to sweep away excess buildup and help reduce the appearance of pores. Consider using a toner like BotanyBeauty’s Hydrosol Facial Tonic to help reduce the appearance of pores and minimize oil production throughout the day. This can be used in conjunction with a cleansing polish or in place of it.

Clay Face Mask

For the special moments when you have some extra time and want to treat yourself, a gentle yet detoxifying face mask is the way to go. Purify your skin of free radicals and stress from environmental exposure with a natural Kauaʻi Clay Mask. Ideal for those who suffer from dullness, hyperpigmentation, breakouts, and clogged pores, a natural face mask will go a long way. This is a great product to use on a more occasional basis (about once a week). It doesn’t have to be a staple in your daily minimalist skin care routine but there’s nothing wrong with having it on hand as a pick-me-up!

Love your skin a little more and your clutter a little less by adopting a minimalist skin care routine. Do it right with BotanyBeauty from Mālie!
