4 Secrets To Layering Candle Scents For Special Occasions In Your Home
Curious about candle layering? Interested in curating your own signature scent within your home? You’ve come to the right place. Discover several secrets to layering candles and learn how to create unique and special ambiances in your living space.
What is Candle Layering?
The art of candle layering is truly that; an art. That means there’s plenty of room for experimentation and interpretation. When we say candle layering, we’re really referring to scent layering, which is all about creating a signature scent for either you or your home.
The key is to blend different scent profiles to find the one that best resonates with you. This could be different at any given time, which is part of the beauty of scent layering; there’s no one-size-fits-all, nor does it have to be the same every time you use it. Scent layering allows for trial, error, and creativity. When you do it with candles, it’s a way to invite unique aromas into your space that might otherwise be unavailable.
How Layering Candles Can Transform Your Space
With candle layering, you can create an atmosphere that’s completely unique to you and the ambiance you’re looking to evoke. It’s multidimensional and personal; whether you’re layering candles just for yourself or are inviting others into your space, this practice is a fantastic form of elevated self-expression.
The Keys to Candle Layering
Before you start mixing random scents together and burning multiple candles at once, it’s best to go in with a strategy. After all, several scents could smell beautiful on their own but put them together and you may find a pungent clash. That’s not what we want. As we said before, layering candles is a bit of an art and while art isn’t meant to be perfect, there are ways to make it work well for you.
Tip 1: Use the Right Wax
First things first, make sure you’re using a candle intended for aroma combination. While every candle can stand alone, some really aren’t meant to be combined with others. Their notes, including their base, mid, and top layer scents, don’t mix well with others.
On top of that, the type of wax matters because you’ll be burning multiple candles at once. If you worried about soot and ash before with just one candle, you’re only going to maximize that by burning multiple candles at the same time. To get around that, opt for candles with clean-burning waxes like soy candles. Better for you, your pets, and the environment, soy candles make the entire experience of candle layering simpler and more serene.

Tip 2: Establish the Base, Middle, and Top Notes
The end result of candle layering may be a complex aroma but that’s not how you want to start out. Going too complicated too early on will either a) confuse the senses or b) create a scent that’s overpowering.
Instead, start simply. Choose one scent to act as the stable base. Vanilla, musk, sandalwood, and patchouli are great options but they’re not the only ones from which to choose. Also keep in mind that the base scent is the one that’s going to linger the longest in the air. It will be your foundation, so make sure it’s something you really connect with.
Also known as the “heart notes,” middle notes are the core of layered soy candles. They’re the aromas you detect once the top notes fade (more on that later). Often floral or spicy, middle notes in candle layering complement both the base and the top notes, acting as a bridge between the two.
Lastly, there’s the top note. This lighter scent is what most people first notice when they step into a space. It’s the first scent in and the first scent out. It doesn’t last as long or have the same lingering effects as the middle and base notes, but it’s a nice introduction into the experience. Great options for top notes are bergamot, grapefruit, mint, and light florals.
Tip 3: Find the Right Combination
Once you’ve established that you want to create a unique sensory experience, the next step is the scent pairing. Here, it’s critical to think about what scents will complement each other vs. which will clash. While it’s perfectly acceptable to get funky and experimental on your own, here are a few suggestions if you’re looking for guidance:
Fruity & Floral: Citrus and Plumeria
Fruity & Woody: Mango and Sandalwood
Warm & Tropical: Coconut and Pineapple
Fresh & Clean: Citrus and Koke’e
You’ll notice that our suggestions contain just two types of candles per option. That’s because each of Mālie’s Soy Candles already contain multiple notes so there’s no need to add in a third candle. If the candles you’re laying have just one pure scent, you may want to opt for more at a time, but remember that that’s not always necessary. Do what smells right to you!
How to Do It Right: Candle Layering in Practice
Something to remember about candle layering vs. scent layering with body fragrances is that the practice is a little different. Unless you’re making your own candle, you’ll have to be a bit strategic about how, when, and where you burn the candles for the maximum effect. There’s no right or wrong way to go about it, but a few options are below.
-
Burn one at a time, allowing the scents to layer on top of each other as time goes on. This is best for small spaces in which scents will linger after the candle has gone out.
- Burn different candles simultaneously in different parts of a room or home. For this strategy, choose candles of different sizes (i.e., mini soy candles and large soy candles) and place them strategically throughout your space in areas where the scents will be the best absorbed, such as in carpeted areas, rooms with rugs, rooms with more fabric and upholstery vs. hardwood floors.
- Burn candles at different durations. Start by burning all three at once. Put out the top note candle first. Keep the middle note candle burning for most of the event. Let the base note candle burn throughout the entirety of the occasion.
