Koke’e State Park is home to Kauai’s sacred forest, 13,000 acres of dense rainforest. Due to invasive species, the delicate ecosystems within this wilderness are in grave danger of extinction. Malie is passionately committed to protecting this rich plant life and will donate a percentage of our sales to the Koke’e Resource Conservation Program (KRCP).
World Wide, ecologists now recognize the forests of Kauai to be one of the areas of greatest native biodiversity in the entire Pacific Region. Koke’e State Park possesses one of the few remaining intact native forest communities in the state, and which is readily accessible for the public to experience and aid in its conservation. The much visited Koke’e, Waimea Canyon, and Na Pali Coast State Parks contain 26 threatened and endangered species and an additional 31 rare plants are found in scattered locations throughout these parks. Indeed, Hawaii has become the ‘endangered species capital of the world.’
The Program Objectives are:
- To protect and restore the ecological integrity of selected areas of Kauai’s upland forests by eradicating incipient invasive weeds from the Koke’e plateau and also suppressing widespread weeds in selected areas of intact native forest.
- To engage the public in direct conservation action by building a strong educational volunteer program in conservation. Increase community awareness of native Hawaiian ecology through education and participation in hands-on activities in the state parks and surrounding forests.
- Strengthen cooperation between private and public conservation related agencies and the community in addressing forest conservation on the island of Kauai.
